Southern Bolivia is one of the most beautiful, if not barren, landscapes I’ve ever seen. For an area that appears completely devoid of all things living, this colorful and dramatic landscape makes for a photographers dream. I spent 4 days traversing this alien world, traveling the well-trodden backpacker trail from San Pedro de Atacama in Northern Chile to the South Western town of Uyuni, Bolivia.
While the Uyuni Salt Flats were the main attraction, the entire trip left my jaw dropped in awe that such diverse places could all exist on one planet. As I was driving across a red barren dessert landscape on my first day, my friend joked that now we don’t have to visit Mars. It looked like we took a wrong turn and ended up on the red planet by accident!
Scattered throughout Southern Bolivia are colorful laguna’s, many of which are filled with flamingo’s. On this 4 day road trip I came across the ones that were white, blue, green and red. Each was stunning in their own unique way.
Southern Bolivia is one of the most impressive places on earth that I’ve had the opportunity to visit. It’s completely different from anything you’d find in North America. From dessert-scape’s to lava fields, salt flats to colorful Laguna’s filled with flamingo’s, Bolivia is out of this world and I hope to return again one day.
